How it works
Scan the barcode
Point your camera at the barcode on the pack. No typing, no account, no sign-up.
The ingredients are read
Helal Scan checks the full declared ingredient list, in the product's own language.
The answer, with the reason
Flagged ingredients are named and explained in plain language, quoting the maker's written statement where we hold one.
For the common doubtful ingredients, the app also shows what the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools say, with sources.
What the answers mean
When the label cannot settle a question, Helal Scan says “Doubtful” rather than guess. How we decide →
Where the information comes from
In order of weight:
- A written statement from the manufacturer about the specific product, obtained by writing to the company.
- A halal certification covering that product in that market.
- The declared ingredient list.
- A consumer's report that a manufacturer answered them, shown as such.
Inference from an ingredient's category can flag something as doubtful, never call it halal.
Ingredient data comes partly from Open Food Facts. Every product we hold a manufacturer statement for has its own page.

Questions
Is Helal Scan free?
Yes. The iPhone app is free, with no account and no third-party tracking, and the E-number checker on this website needs no app.
Is Helal Scan a halal certifier?
No. Helal Scan does not issue halal certificates or religious rulings, and its answers are not a fatwa. They combine published scholarly positions with ingredient analysis and can be incomplete, so for anything that matters, verify with the manufacturer and a qualified authority.
Which products and countries does it cover?
Packaged supermarket food with a barcode. Helal Scan is built for Germany: it reads German ingredient lists and answers in your language. If a product is missing, you can add it from a photo of its ingredient list.
Is there an Android app?
Not yet. Helal Scan runs on iPhone (iOS). The E-number checker on this website works on any phone.
