Is whey Halal?

Whey is the liquid left when milk is curdled into cheese or quark. Dried, it becomes whey powder; filtered, it becomes whey protein. Most whey comes from cheese set with rennet, so the rennet question comes with it. Helal Scan treats whey as Halal and explains why in a short note.

Is whey Halal?

Short answer

Yes, in Helal Scan. Whey comes from milk, and the app treats the rennet behind it the way it treats rennet itself: Halal unless it comes from pork. A whey entry cannot name its rennet, so the app adds a note saying so. If the list names pork, or another ingredient is flagged, that decides the result. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools see whey from cheese made with rennet from an animal not slaughtered the Islamic way differently (see below).

Halal or not depends on what it is made from

Whey is Halal: in Helal Scan, because it comes from milk and the rennet behind it is accepted unless it comes from pork.

What whey is

When rennet or acid curdles milk, the milk separates into solid curd, which becomes cheese or quark, and a yellowish liquid: whey. Making a kilo of cheese leaves around nine litres of it. Sweet whey comes from cheese set with rennet; acid whey comes from quark, cream cheese and strained yoghurt, which are set with cultures and acid instead.

On the pack: whey, whey powder, sweet whey powder, whey protein, whey protein concentrate or whey permeate. German packs write Molke, Molkenpulver, Süßmolkenpulver, Molkenerzeugnis, Molkenprotein or Molkenpermeat. Lactose, milk sugar, is made from whey too.

The rennet question

Whey carries the question of the rennet that set the cheese. Certifiers note that most industrial whey today comes from cheese set with microbial rennet or fermentation-produced chymosin, with no animal involved. Some still comes from cheese set with calf rennet.

Helal Scan follows the Hanafi position on rennet (see is rennet Halal?): rennet from any animal except the pig is accepted, and so is the whey. A whey entry on a list cannot say which rennet was used, and the app's note says exactly that. If the list names pork rennet, the product is not Halal.

Is whey protein Halal?

Whey protein is whey with most of the water, lactose and fat filtered out. The app treats whey protein and whey protein concentrate like any other whey. In a protein powder the other ingredients usually decide the result: a plain flavouring makes the product Mushbooh until the maker answers (see is natural flavouring Halal?), and capsules or added collagen bring their own question. Scan the tub and the app checks every line.

Common questions

Is whey Halal?

Yes, in Helal Scan. It comes from milk, and the app treats the rennet behind it as it treats rennet itself: Halal unless it is from pork. A note says that the pack does not name the rennet.

Is whey protein Halal?

The whey in it is, in Helal Scan. Look at the rest of the list: a plain flavouring keeps a protein powder Mushbooh until the maker answers, and capsules or collagen need their own check.

Is sweet whey powder Halal?

Yes, in Helal Scan. Sweet whey comes from cheese set with rennet, and the app treats it like any other whey.

Is lactose Halal?

Yes, in Helal Scan. Lactose is milk sugar made from whey, and the app treats it like whey, with the same note.

Do all schools accept whey?

No. The Hanafi school accepts rennet from any animal except the pig, and so the whey. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools treat whey from cheese set with rennet from an animal not slaughtered the Islamic way as impure. If you follow them, look for whey from cheese made with microbial rennet, or ask the maker.
